Hello Explorers! Today we are going to examine some dinosaurs that I refer to as the “Lesser Uniques” in Jurassic World Alive.  Being that Unique dinosaurs are supposed to be the end game goal, logically it would make sense that they’d be the most beastly contenders in PvP battle. So why is it that we still have a good few Uniques widely considered as irrelevant to turn to?  Sadly, the list is not short. I’m talking about you: Diorajasaur, Tuoramoloch, Grypolyth, and now the newly added Stygidaryx and Pterovexus.

Let’s consider the following:

Intended use: Lethal armored counter attacker

Areas it falls short: Health, possible Speed?

For a dinosaur whose intended use is to swap-in and withstand taking a beating, it doesn’t exactly offer the resilience to last long from that beating. Sure, it has Distracting Impact, but when you have big bads like Thor & Tenonto chomping on it’s carapace, what’s the point? Also, what’s the point of making Tuojiango a hybrid component if Diora is not inheriting some of that extra beef?

Solution: Up its health by 20%. If it’s intended to be beaten on by utilizing its SIA, it needs extra health. If you REALLY want to make it a force to be reckoned with, bring its speed up to 109 or 110. You’ll be giving “The Big 3” a run for their money & second guessing their strategy, but if Diorajasaur were to receive a drastic health boost then a speed boost wouldn’t be quite necessary. Also, consider the fact that this thing is made out of 2 Epic components. Going off that logic, it should be considerably better than its current stats. I mean, come on! this mini-Godzilla! This should be practically indestructible in taking a beating!

Intended use: crowd-control counter hit & runner

Areas it falls short: Damage, needs a Rampage

Early in the state of JWA, there was no question- Tuoramoloch was the best dinosaur in the game. It had a base damage which matched that of Indoraptor’s with a counter attack!  Yes, that was bonkers. But then they went ahead and GUTTED that damage (1400 to 950 at level 26), and Tuoramoloch has been hobbling his way back to relevance since. It’s damage currently is at 1070 at level 26 and Ludia buffed it’s speed from 121 to 126 in patch 1.5, which has certainly done it some favors. But nevertheless, compared to other dinosaurs in its Unique-class, it is still lacking.

Solution: Bump it’s attack up to 1160 at level 26. If you want to assure it’s relevance? Give it back its Rampage. Whether to stun or run, It deserves its Rampage it once had. Considering Tuoramoloch loses the Instant Charge its Stygimoloch & Paramoloch parents had, giving the Greater Stun a Rampage again seems justified. From a balance perspective, giving Rampage to stun would keep that damage in check with a 3 turn cooldown, but hey if others feel Tuoramoloch deserves a strong runaway, I wouldn’t argue against that either. Point being, its kit need some power to its punch. Consider as a comparison- Monostegotops (a legendary) is sitting at a whopping 280 damage higher than Tuoramoloch, and also boasts 30% armor now making Monostegotops an Impact freight train. Monostegotops offers more meta viability than this Unique contender. Let’s fix that!

Intended use: Same as Diorajasaur but with Long Protection

Areas it falls short: Everywhere.

When a new Unique is introduced, I imagine they’re made with a purpose in mind of where they thrive/contribute in the game. Grypolyth, on the other hand, I’m afraid has never really had a distinct purpose. A crocodilian with the slowest speed amongst Uniques, trying to be a quasi-tank with decent damage when Ferocious Strike is added, so-so 20% armor, and below average health. There is nothing about this crocodilian that inspires an effort to power up, let alone battle. With how slow it is, it’s dead by turn 2.

Solution: I think Ludia needs to go back to the drawing board and completely rework this crocodilian, it’s completely useless. FUN FACT!, did you know that gators & crocodiles are deceptively fast? I don’t see why this Unique should be considered any slower than 110 speed. It makes me sad because I would love to have Grypolyth on my team, but with its current stats & move-set there’s a lot left to be desired. Next.

With how new the Unique birds are to the game it’s too soon to gauge where their best uses lie, but there are a couple areas with concerns/question marks.

Intended use: Swap-In Invincibility Bleeder

Areas it falls short: 1 on-hit attack, damage

Overall this bird’s stats are off to a great start, no complaints. It’s clear where Ludia was going with Styga: a supplement dinosaur to add a cunning defensive aspect to a player’s swap-in game. Strategically, if executed right, this bird offers some tact in the swap in game- defending for big attacks (such as Erlidom’s Rampage or Diloracheirus’ Rampage & Run). My biggest beef?: it only has 1 on-hit attack, and that’s its’ only a basic attack for that matter. Very tactical bird- would be amazing against tanks…if tanks were as relevant as they were a couple patches ago.

Solution: Give one of its swoop’s an on-hit effect and Stygidaryx will be a force to be reckoned with. Perhaps make Lethal Swoop an on-hit swoop? OR! Cleansing swoop, sacrifice immediate swap out by running the risk of hitting a counter attack. Personally, I think the Lethal Swoop would make the most sense with an on-hit since the Cleansing Swoop is clearly a “get in, get out” defense mechanism. Also, with those on-hits it could use a little nudge in its damage.

Intended use: Bleeder (old Monomimus replica without Evasion???)

Areas it falls short: Pretty much everywhere! Frail dino with impractical Swap in bleed, no Evasion, poor damage.

Basically Ludia gutted Monomimus to try and make this flier a thing. Question is, when on earth is anyone rationally going to Swap-In this flier?! It’s dead on swap in, look how frail this thing is!! ITS DAMAGE IS HORRIBLE!! What even is this?? In its current state, Pterovexus is a flop. This should have been the marquee flier with how difficult it is to invest in.

Solution: How about instead of swap in bleed, Ludia gives it a new ability called “Swap in Evasion” that lasts for 2 or 3 turns. Also, drastically increase its damage! Now you’ve got a predator in the sky to worry about. A slight visual rework wouldn’t hurt either, it’s not exactly something to instill terror. Maybe make it a bit bigger?

The biggest issue where both these fliers fall short? They BOTH require Darwinopterus as their hybrid ingredient, a park-based Epic spawn, essentially giving you an ultimatum of choosing between which hybrid you get to dedicate your efforts toward with one of the hardest Epics to hunt for.

Parting Words: All in all, Unique dinosaurs are what all players work toward as their end game in mind. As such, they should be threats above all else. ALL OF THEM.  Bringing re-balance to these Lesser Uniques will lead to a wider range of team diversity in battles (as opposed to the same 10-12 everyone currently has on their teams). Multiple forms of battle strategies will populate the arena-making it even more exciting and challenging. What do you think Explorers? Join us on the Metahub Discord and let us know!
